De plantaire aponeurose, ook bekend als de plantaire fascia, is een sterke laag wit vezelig weefsel dat zich onder de huid op de voetzool bevindt.
Richting de voorkant van de voet, halverwege het middenvoetsbeentje, verdeelt het zich in vijf secties, die zich elk uitstrekken tot een teen en zich uitstrekken over de buigpezen.
Lateraal is het verdeeld in drie secties: de mediale, de laterale en de centrale. Het centrale deel is structureel en functioneel het belangrijkste en is aan de oorsprong aan de mediale calcaneus (hielbeen) bevestigd. Het mediale gedeelte ligt over de spieren naar de hallux (grote teen), terwijl het laterale gedeelte over de spieren naar de kleine teen ligt.
Tijdens het lopen functioneert de plantaire aponeurose voornamelijk tijdens de ‘hielverhoging’ tot ‘afzetten’. Het stabiliseert de voetboog en maakt buiging van het eerste middenvoetsbeentje mogelijk, waardoor het eerste middenvoetsbeentje het grootste deel van het lichaamsgewicht kan dragen. Het zorgt ook voor schokabsorptie wanneer de voet de grond raakt.
Ontsteking of verwonding van de plantaire aponeurose (bekend als plantaire fasciitis) komt veel voor bij atleten en veroorzaakt voetpijn en kan leiden tot verdere beenblessures als deze niet wordt behandeld. De aandoening wordt behandeld met rust, pijnstillers of in extreme gevallen extracorporale schokgolftherapie.
